As per the directives of the Honourable Supreme Court in its judgment dated,25.9.87, in writ petition No. 348-352 of 1985, all the State Governments, Medical Institutions and Universities are required to amend their rules and regulations to introduce a uniform residency scheme by 1993 “A uniform practice has to be evolved so that the discipline would be introduced. We accordingly allow the present arrangement to continue for a period of five yearsI.e. upto 1992 inclusive. For admission beginning from 1993 there would be only onepattern. PG medical maternity rules leave women doctors paying the price

A woman in her thirties from Tamil Nadu says she deferred marriage after completing her MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), a 5.5-year programme, to pursue a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), a postgraduate speciality degree. To enter a specialised stream, she had to clear the NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test–Postgraduate), a mandatory national-level entrance examination for postgraduate medical courses. However, she was unable to clear the exam on her first attempt. During this period, as she waited another year to reattempt the examination, she was advised by her parents to get married, with the assurance that she could clear NEET PG the following year. Her parents expressed concern that, at nearly 25 years of age, delaying marriage further might make it difficult for her to find a suitable match. She got married. FORDA, RTI activists point at corruption nexus over non-payment of stipend to PG medical students

As many as 100 postgraduate (PG) students  of  a private medical college in Sullia, Karnataka recently complained  of   no n- payment   of  their monthly stipend by their college authorities. This has once again opened the can  of   worms highlighting the problems faced by the PG medical students across medical colleges in India. Karnataka students claim their persistent requests for stipend have fallen on deaf ears  of  the college authorities. Earlier this week, the PG students decided to stage a protest against the college management if their  stipends  were not released. This is not a single case, as several private medical students across the country have complained  of   non-pay ment   of   stipends .
