1.At present, there are 362 medical colleges in the country, out of which 168 are in Government sector and 194 in private sector. The intake capacity for MBBS course of these medical colleges is 45629 annually and 22850 for postgraduate courses 

2. 4 states Andhra,Maharashtra,karnataka and TN combined have nearly half the seats(approx 11000) for PG while the rest 24 states combined has same no. of seats it clearly shows the imbalance of seats in the country 

3.In order to increase the number of MBBS and PG seats in the country, the Central Government has rationalized the Medical Council of India (MCI) Regulations in terms of land requirement, bed strength, bed occupancy, maximum admission capacity, increase in age of teaching faculty, utilization of district hospitals for establishment of new medical colleges in the government sector and increase in teacher students ratio for PG courses. This has resulted in increase in 10262 undergraduate seats and 7585 PG seats during the last three years i.e. 2010-11 to 2012-13.
