मौत की नींद में सो जाने वाली दामिनी का सम्बंध उत्तर प्रदेश के बलिया (Ballia) से था और उसने अपनी स्कूल तथा कॉलेजकी शिक्षा का खर्च ट्यूशन पढ़ाकर निकाला था. दामिनी को जानने वालों ने कहा कि वह मेहनती थी और जीवन में आगे बढ़ना चाहती थी.
जानने वालों के मुताबिक दामिनी का परिवार करीब 25 साल पहले आकर दक्षिण-पश्चिमी दिल्ली ( South West Delhi ) के एकमध्य वर्गीय परिवेश में बसा था. वहीं 23 वर्ष पहले दामिनी का जन्म हुआ था. दामिनी की प्रतिभा को देखते हुएउसके पिता ने उच्च शिक्षा के लिए कर्ज लिया था.
कॉलेज की शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद फिजियोथेरेपिस्ट ( Physiotherapist) का प्रशिक्षण लेने के लिए वह देहरादून( Dehradun ) गई थी. वहां से लौटने के बाद उसने उत्तरी दिल्ली के एक निजी अस्पताल में प्रशिक्षु के रूप मेंकाम करना शुरू किया था.
दामिनी अपने घर की सबसे बड़ी संतान थी और माता-पिता को उम्मीद थी कि उसकी सफलता से उसके दो छोटे भाइयों को भी आगे बढ़ने की प्रेरणामिलेगी. जानकार ने कहा कि किसी भी परिवार की तरह उसके माता पिता को भी उम्मीद थी कि उसे अच्छी नौकरी तथा अच्छा वेतन मिलेगा,
लेकिन 16 दिसम्बर को सामूहिक दुष्कर्म की शिकार हो जाने से उसका और उसके परिवार का सपना चूर हो गया. इसके बाद 13 दिनों तक जीवन और मृत्यु के बीच संघर्ष करते हुए दामिनी आखिरी दम तक लड़ते हुए शहीद हो गई i
