Docs must be up to date with healthcare laws, says PGI Dean

The dean of PGI, prof Amod Gupta, while inaugurating the two-day CME-cum-Workshop on Laws Applicable to Hospitals: Issues, Challenges and Possible Solutions on February 7-8, organised by the Department of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, highlighted the reasons for enactment of some of the laws like PCPNDT Act and CPA.
He further stated that health profession is probably the one profession which interacts with law enforcement agencies the most. "Thus, it is essential that the healthcare professionals must be made aware about the statutory provisions," he added. He further stated that all students who enter the medical profession must be given orientation to the laws which are applicable in day to day practice.
"It has to be understood that the medical record generated during the course of treatment may be called for legal scrutiny in times to come," he clarified.
The Medical Superintendent-cum-Head of Department of Hospital Administration, Prof A K Gupta, while addressing the delegates, stressed upon the need to be updated about the legal aspects since hospitals routinely face issues related to the application of legal provisions. He said that rules made under the laws e.g. BMW Management rules have to be diligently followed not only for meeting the requirement but also as a part of our moral obligation to keep our environment pollution free.
During the first day, four important laws including BMW management Act, PCPNDT Act, Transplant of Human Organs Act and RTI Act were discussed. A panel discussion was held to address the queries raised by the participants in the end.
On day two, discussions will be held on CPA, Delhi Fire Services Act and CLA will be discussed.
More than 70 healthcare administrators with diverse background from across the country from Medical Colleges in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, & Uttar Pradesh, Armed forces, CRPF and other institution are participating in this workshop. The objective of the program is to equip the senior health and hospital functionaries with necessary inputs for efficient and effective management of legal issues pertaining to health, hospitals, community and environment.
